Things to Do Inside Dinokeng Game Reserve
Dinokeng Game Reserve is Gauteng’s only free-roaming Big 5 reserve — just over an hour from Johannesburg and Pretoria, yet a world away in experience. Here are some of the unforgettable activities you can enjoy during your stay:
Self-Drive Safari
Explore the reserve at your own pace with a marked self-drive route. Perfect for early risers and late-afternoon golden hours. Pack your camera — you may spot elephants, rhino, lions, buffalo, and leopards all in one day.
Guided Game Drives
Join one of the reserve’s expert guides for a 2–3 hour drive into the heart of the wild. Guides share tracking insights, conservation stories, and help you get up close (safely) to wildlife.
Night Drives
Experience the bush after dark — a completely different world of nocturnal sounds and sightings, from hyena calls to owls and elusive predators on the move.
Bush Braais & Picnic Spots
There are designated picnic sites along the self-drive route where you can stop, cook, and soak in the sights and sounds of the bush. Ideal for families and full-day explorers.
Bird Watching
With over 300 recorded bird species, Dinokeng is a paradise for birders. From fish eagles to lilac-breasted rollers, you’ll want to keep binoculars close.
Walking Trails & Photographic Hides
Book a guided walk or spend quiet time at one of the photographic hides overlooking watering holes — perfect for slow observation and wildlife photography.
Water Activities & Boat Cruises (If available)
In certain areas, seasonal water levels allow for guided boat trips to spot hippos, crocodiles, and birds from the water.
Restaurants & Bush Dining Experiences
From relaxed bush breakfasts to crackling fireside dinners, Dinokeng offers a surprisingly diverse food scene. Here’s where to eat during your stay:
SunLodge is a fully self-catering venue — but that doesn’t mean you need to cook every meal. Whether you’re after a lazy lunch, a sunset dinner, or a fireside celebration with friends and family, Dinokeng Game Reserve has several great restaurants to choose from. All just a short drive away.

Arlington Brewery & Cidery
A hidden gem. Locally brewed beers, ciders, and a menu that leans hearty and unpretentious. Great vibe for sundowners or group lunches.
